What is it about?

EC3333 is an essential module for all students looking to specialise in Financial Economics. It covers topics such as Returns and Volatility, CAPM, Annuity and Perpetuities, Bond Prices, Yields, Term Structure and Option
.

Students are evaluated through three modes of assessment -- Participation, Mid-term and Final. For Participation, it depends on your tutor. For my case, students are asked to volunteer to write down their answers on the board and there is no Oral presentation involved. However, as physical tutorials were cancelled subsequently due to COVID-19, we were asked to instead email in our answers for the questions that we wish to present on and the tutor will go ahead to pick a few students' answers to show during Zoom Tutorial. For Mid-term, students are given 26 MCQs. The paper is not hard but extremely tricky. We were not given any past year papers to practice on. For Final, there was meant to be SAQs. However, due to COVID-19, our paper is conducted online and he set about 50 MCQs for us to complete in 1.5 hours. He deliberately set a lot of questions so that most of the students can't finish. However, he underestimated us as the paper is manageable and most students actually completed it.

Review

Professor Wong Wei Kang takes a more quantitative approach for his modules. I enjoyed this module a lot as it is really useful and beneficial, with real-world applicability. In addition, Professor Wong Wei Kang teaches well. I have absolutely nothing to complain about and I would recommend all economics major to take it, even if you are not intending to work in the finance sector.

For Mid-Term, it is manageable. However, I must put up a disclaimer that I have taken modules in Finance (FIN2704 and FIN3701) prior to taking this module and some of the concepts taught in this module are a repeat of what I have learnt before. However, this module takes a more theoretical approach and Professor Wong Wei Kang does a sweet job in explaining how we derive the formulas. On the other hand, Finance modules offered by the Business faculty literally just throw you the formula for you to put in the numbers. For Final, as it is affected by COVID-19, it may not be indicative of the module in general. However, my Final was easy and I completed the paper in an hour and 10 minutes.

This module does have a heavy workload but the content is rather intuitive. As long as you follow the Professor in his lecture, you will definitely be fine. If you are a quantitative person, I am sure this module will be an easy A- for you. If you are not, I would still recommend you to take it as it is a highly useful module. I believe hard work does pay off, and an A grade is still attainable.
