What is it about?

FIN3701 is an intensive Finance module. It is essential for students who are looking to specialise in Finance. Topics covered include equity valuation model (Dividend Discount Model, Relative Valuation Model, Discounted Cash Flow Analysis), Merger and Acquisition, Dividends and etc. The whole syllabus is covered in the first 7-8 weeks, with the remaining weeks dedicated to presentation, tutorials and the going through of Test papers.

Students are assessed through a wide range of assessments from Participation to Tutorial to Case Study to Critiques to two Tests conducted at varying stages of the semester. For Participation, it is rather self-explanatory -- you will have to attend all seminars and participate accordingly (e.g. presenting your answers for tutorial, asking questions during other groups' presentations). For Tutorial, groups will be asked to submit their answer beforehand and Professor Tan will choose specific questions for each group to present on. Groups can go up together to present their answer or send 1-2 students up to present. For Case Study, you will be required to do up a 15-page report on a case that is allocated to you and present your findings to the class. As for the deadline, it will depend on the case you are assigned -- some groups present shortly after recess week, while some present after final test. For Critiques, you will be required to evaluate other groups' reports and submit your thoughts as a group about a day before they present their findings in class. For the two Tests, it is 100% MCQs and the questions are generally tricky.

Review

Corporate Finance is an extremely tough module. I fought really hard for the A especially since I was taking other really taxing modules alongside it. However, Associate Professor Ruth Tan makes this module so much less irritating. She teaches well and on top of that, she's nice and caring. She even bought us chocolate and gave it to us during our Test. Sadly, she doesn't teach much modules... In addition, I got really great teammates. We split the workload fairly -- members who are good with numbers focus on the firm evaluation portion while members who are good with words focus on the writing. She does provide questions that we have to answer to for case study so you don't need to worry about not knowing where to start or write about.

Overall, it is a really taxing module and much effort is needed to understand the syllabus. But well, since it is a compulsory module for Finance Specialisation, why not take it under a great professor?

  1. Hello! May I ask whether you can choose your own groups for FIN3701 or will it be randomly allocated!?
