What is it about?

GER1000 is a general education module and it is compulsory for all. It's a statistics module and it covers a total of six different segments -- Design, Association, Measurement, Sampling, Uncertainty and Networks.

Students are assessed through Weekly quizzes, Mid-terms, Participation, Project and Finals. For the weekly quizzes, it tests on concepts taught in lectures (e-lectures). Tutorials are held bi-weekly,  Please make sure you attend it because your participation points come from your tutor. Mid-terms is one-hour, and is generally manageable -- just that the questions can be quite tricky. For the project, groups will be required to do up a poster, an executive summary based on a chosen topic and present it to their tutor. For the finals, it is a two-hour paper, and they are generally tricky (like mid-terms).

Review

I got Mr. Lam as my tutor and he is amazing. He goes beyond the syllabus and provides some insights so that we can better understand the topic. The only problem is that he doesn't send his slides, which is quite well-made.

My group project mates were great and our presentation was well-received. The only problem we face is the ambiguous instructions given for the executive summary and poster as there isn't a standard set of requirements, i.e. different tutors have different requirements. So, make sure you follow your tutor closely and not blindly follow your friends who is taking the module under another tutor.

The key to scoring well for this module is really practices. I studied hard for the finals and did all the past-year papers and even re-do all of it once. I was extremely prepared for the finals and that's what got me my A as my mid-terms was barely above the median.

All in all, GER1000 is a relatively easy module. The workload is light so make sure you understand the content well.
