What is it about?

ACC1701X is a introductory module that covers basic accounting concepts such as ledger, journal, statement of financial position and so on.

Students are assessed through Participation, Presentation, Mid-Term and Finals. For Presentation, the format differs across the tutors. My tutor, Mr. Philip Toh, allocates us into groups of 4/5 and two from each group are required to come forth to present the group's answer for the assigned tutorial. Mid-terms is a one-hour, 30 MCQs paper. It is easy but some of the questions are tricky. Bell-curve is steep, with the average being a whopping 25/30. The grade-differentiating component is the finals, a two-hour paper, which includes one SAQ and 35 MCQs. Finals is tricky and you will have to do extra exercises to be able to complete the SAQ with confidence. For both mid-terms and finals, students can bring in a piece of cheat sheet.

Review

Mr. Philip Toh is a great tutor. He often shares his experiences as a former-employee for Apple, which are interesting.

My group project mates were so-so but our presentation seems to be well-received by the tutor as he was smiling the entire time through our presentation.

The key to scoring well for this module is really practice. I took accounting back in secondary school, so I was slacking the entire time through the module. Lecture is not a must-go, because you can understand what's going on through the lecture notes and/or textbook.

All in all, ACC1701X is a manageable module. The workload is a bit heavy, but as long as you do your weekly tutorials, it should be fine.
